How do I login to Canvas?

The good news is you no longer have to reset or change your Canvas password as Canvas is housed within the Shasta College Portal. 

To change your Shasta College Portal password, 

Manage Your Account Settings

Click on the [1] Manage Your Account Settings link

Change Now
then, [2] click Change Now.


Does Shasta College provide students with email addresses with a ".edu" email domain?

Not at this time.

However, there is a proliferation of free email providers such as Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail and Live to name a few. Some providers, such as Gmail, also bundle other useful services such as Google Docs (Docs (word processing), Sheets (spreadsheets), and Slides (presentations)), free storage space, a document sharing features. Research which email service provider meets your specific needs and sign up for a free account.

The good news is, your Canvas Password is now the same password as your Shasta College Portal Password - you no longer have to remember multiple passwords!

Why am I being directed to an Open CCC page when I click on Canvas; is this a hoax?

No, that is not a hoax. 

Open CCC is the California Community Colleges federated identity initiativeAt the request of the California Community College Chancellor's Office, and, in compliance with that request, students that do not have a California Community Colleges federated identity will be directed to OpenCCC.net to establish a California Community Colleges federated identity when clicking on the Canvas icon from within the Shasta College Portal. Once you have established a California Community College federated ID, you will be redirected to Canvas

Yes.

There is a known compatibility issue with the Canvas App and the Shasta College Portal. When a user initially starts the mobile application, and taps on "Find school" and they type in "shastacollege.instructure.com", they may receive an error that says:

 

Webpage not available. It could not be loaded because: net::ERR_CLEARTEXT_NOT_PERMITTED"

 

Possible scenarios that could exacerbate this concern:

"I recently updated the Canvas App and now I am unable to login to Canvas using the Canvas App"

Updating the Canvas App will prohibit future access to Canvas using the Canvas App

"I recently purchased/acquired a new mobile device. I am able to still access Canvas using the Canvas App on my old mobile device; but, when I try to access it on my new device, I am unable to login to Canvas using the Canvas App.

Updating a mobile device will prohibit future access to Canvas using the Canvas App

"I recently logged out of the Canvas App. I have neither updated the app nor my mobile device; yet, I am not able to login to Canvas using the Canvas App."

Logging out of the Canvas App on a mobile device, regardless of whether the app is updated or the mobile device is changed, will prohibit future access to Canvas using the Canvas App

 

These scenarios are characteristic of the incompatibility. At this time there is no resolution.

 

Suggested alternatives include (but are not limited to):

 

Android

  • Using either Chrome or Firefox mobile apps to access Canvas through the Shasta College Portal allows successful access to Canvas
  • The Shasta College Office of Educational Technology discourages the use of the Android Internet Browser and the use of the Safari Browser for Android as we have seen undesirable results accessing Canvas using these apps.

iOS

  • Using either Safari, Chrome or Firefox mobile apps to access Canvas through the Shasta College Portal allows successful access to Canvas

 

** The Shasta College Office of Educational Technology highly recommends the use of the most current release of all apps to access Canvas to provide the most successful experience when working in their online courses.

Please make sure to view the Canvas student orientation. The Canvas guides can also answer many questions students have about Canvas.

If the student orientation and the guides are not helping you find the answers you need, please use the Help icon that is visible in the lower left corner of the Global Navigation Menu once you login to Canvas Dashboard; the Global Navigation Menu is also visible from your courses in Canvas. Use the "Report a Problem" option and our team can usually get back to you within a day.

Note: the app is a great resource for reading content. However, we want you to know that there have been issues with students submitting Assignments, responding to Discussions, and taking quizzes. Use of the app for these can have unexpected and often undesirable results. There is currently no resolution to this issue. We highly recommend that you log in from a browser (like Chrome or Firefox). However, it is always a good idea to use the most current release of any app you choose to use.

Why Can't I See My Online Courses?

You will only be able to see courses in which you are enrolled when you log into Canvas. If you received an enrollment verification when you enrolled, indicating that your course is in Canvas and it is not accessible, please contact your instructor and let them know you cannot see the course. If you do not remember the instructor’s name, check the MyShasta course schedule. Also, verify your course schedule in MyShasta and make sure you are enrolled in the course. If you do not see the course listed in MyShasta, contact the Shasta College Office of Admissions and Records; there may be a confusion with your enrollment status.

If the course is already concluded, the course will appear in the course history in the All Courses menu. If the course does not display in the All Courses menu under "Past Courses" the teacher has effectively "hidden" the course from student view: this is a feature that only the faculty control. If you have any concerns regarding course availability in Canvas after they have concluded, your best resource will be to reach out to your instructor for that course.

How do I see grades after the semester has ended?

Once the semester ends. your teachers work diligently to finalize your course grades and get them submitted so you can view them in your MyShasta account. Once the term closes to students, your courses become "read only", meaning that you can no longer participate (submit Assignments, reply to Discussions, take Quizzes, so forth...); but, you can still see the course material, view your grades, read all the comments your teachers have left you. 

Looking for your courses?

When the term closes to students, course will no longer have a Course Card on your Dashboard:

Instead, you will find your courses on your Courses Menu:

Click [1] Courses, then, [2] All Courses.

Any course from past semesters will be under the heading Past Enrollments.

 

Then, from within the course, click [3], Grades:
